HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Three University of Southern Mississippi football players were reported to be in fair condition at Forrest General Hospital after being shot early Sunday morning outside Remington’s Hunt Club, a large nightspot popular with university students.

Southern Miss and police officials identified the three players as Tim Green, 21, of Columbia, S.C.; Deddrick Jones, 23, of Bastrop, La.; and Martez Smith, 22, of Canton, Miss. Smith, a senior who was highly recruited, was a starting outside linebacker and special teams leader who sustained a season-ending knee injury about three weeks ago. Green is a backup linebacker and plays on special teams, and Jones is a backup defensive lineman.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with these young men and their families, friends and teammates," said Joe Paul, vice president of student affairs at USM. "Coach (Larry) Fedora has been with these young men and their families since the wee hours of this morning. He will make a statement for the media (Monday)."

Paul said USM President Martha Saunders was also with the families, and that Gov. Haley Barbour had called her and "offered his condolences and offered the full support of the state of Mississippi in the investigation."

In a written statement, Saunders said: "At Southern Miss our number-one concern is for the health and welfare of these students and for their family members who await their recovery. We will do all we can to assist these young men and their families, as well as assist the Hattiesburg Police Department in its investigation of this event."

Fedora, also in a written statement, said, "These three men are an integral part of the success of our football program and we will continue to keep them in our hearts and hope for a speedy recovery." Fedora’s press conference is scheduled for Monday morning.

Hattiesburg police spokesman Sgt. Allen Murray said no arrests have been made. He said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, U.S. Marshal Service and USM campus police are helping with the investigation.

Police said the argument began inside the nightclub about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, then continued in the parking lot, where the three were shot. He said Green, Jones and Smith were not armed and that no other injuries have been reported and police "are looking at it as an isolated incident." He said police have not ruled out gang involvement in the shootings.

"Right now it’s unknown what started the altercation," Murray said.

Remington’s Hunt Club bills itself as "the largest nightclub in Mississippi," and has locations on North 31st Avenue in Hattiesburg and in Starkville. The club is a multi-level, indoor-outdoor complex, can hold large crowds and has hosted nationally known bands in concert.

Southern Miss on Saturday defeated the University of Central Florida 31-21 in Orlando, Fla., USM, which travels on a chartered plane, returned Saturday just after 6 p.m. to the Hattiesburg-Laurel Airport, a source with the school’s athletic department said.

The manager working at the bowling alley in the Remington’s Hunt Club complex on Sunday afternoon declined to give his name.

"We really don’t want to comment while the police are investigating," he said.
